SSANU Threatens To Strike Next Week

asuu-logo
The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) says it may commence a nationwide strike by Monday if its members are not paid their salaries. Mr Promise Adewusi, the association’s General Secretary, said this at a press briefing in Abuja on Thursday. He said that the strike was being considered to protest against the stoppage of the salaries of university workers without any justifiable explanation. He said that the strike was sequel to a letter written to the Vice-Chancellors of the affected federal universities and Senator Anyim Pius Anyim, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF). Adewusi said that letters were similarly written to the Minister of Labour and Productivity, Chief Emeka Wogu, the Minister of State for Education, Chief Nyesom Wike and the Executive Secretary, National Universities Commission (NUC), Prof. Julius Okojie.

He, however stressed that SSANU members would be directed to proceed on the strike if the government refused to pay the salaries. Adewusi advised the vice-chancellors, the SGF and the ministers of labour and education to take immediate steps to remedy the situation. “Our members in the effected universities have drawn our attention to the non-payment of their August salaries without any justifiable explanations, even as the month of September has almost drawn to an end. “We, hereby, place on record that our members had long discharged their obligation as workers for the said month and they, therefore, deserve their pay.

“The non-payment of our members in the universities, when some other federal universities have since paid the August salaries, is viewed by our members as an act of punishment against them for working and this has made them restive. “We, therefore, demand that the August salaries of our members in those universities be paid to them on or before Friday, 27 September, 2013. “Failure to pay by the stipulated date will be regarded as a conclusive act of aggression against the economic rights and interests of our members,” he said. Adewusi said that the union would be at liberty to direct members to stop work, as they would no longer be in a position to continue to pay for their transport to work. Also, Alhaji Mohammed Aliyu, the SSANU Chairman in Federal University of Technology, Minna, called on the Federal Government to pay the workers so as to promote industrial harmony. Aliyu said that it was unfair for the government not to pay their salaries, considering the fact that SSANU had employed dialogue rather than embark on a strike like the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASSU).

He, however, warned the government not to misjudge the union’s peaceful disposition as a sign of weakness. “Government should not punish us because of ASUU is on strike. If that is what they intend to do, it means they are inviting more trouble in the system. “We in SSANU believe that through continuous dialogue, contentious issues can be resolved; but for government to refuse to pay our members for two months is a call for confrontation,” he said.

ASUU Former President, Festus Iyayi, Was Murdered

ASUU former president, Festus Iyayi, was cruelly murdered-he did not die-by a yet to be identified assassin in the employ of the Government of Kogi State. This is the only conclusion that can be derived from the facts provided in the media. According to the existing facts, while traveling along Lokoja-Abuja road in the company of his ASUU comrades on their way to Kano to discuss the current strike issue, an escort car in the convoy of the Governor of Kogi State, Mr Idris Wada, rammed into the ASUU bus killing Iyayi andinjuring some lecturers. It is difficult to accept the wasting of one of Africa’s most cerebral and committed scholars by a reckless driver who probably assumed that because he was ‘privileged’ to be in a Governor’s convoy he was above traffic regulations and other users of the road, including even his intellectual superiors.

The murder of Comrade Iyayi is no doubt a product of the empty pomposity that pervades the corridors of power in Nigeria, from the Governors to their cooks. This pomposity is seen in a culture of impunity and recklessness that gives them the sense that they own our lives, and all that belongs to this country. Killings on the road by those who occupy government houses must stop. It is a shame that it appears that the Governor of that State lacks the capacity to prevent his drivers from negligent driving, otherwise his convoy should not have been involved in another accident so soon after the tragic accident that claimed the life of his ADC just in December 2012. It may well be that his drivers expect that the only way they can please a former pilot, that he is, is to literally fly on the road.

Whatever the case may be, the Governor bears responsibility for the murder of one of the most outstanding Nigerian residents. He has to pay for this anyway.

How the candidates may fare tomorrow

The battle line is drawn among the five major contestants in the very keen contest to replace the outgoing governor of Anambra State, Mr. Peter Obi. These are Chief Willie Obiano of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, Senator Chris Ngige of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Comrade Tony Nwoye of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Mr Ifeanyi Ubah of Labour Party, LP, and Mr. Godwin Ezeemo of Progressive Peoples Alliance, PPA. Obiano and Nwoye are from Anambra North senatorial zone, the only area that has not produced the governor since Anambra State was created in 1991, while Ubah and Ezeemo are from Anambra South. Ngige is the only candidate from Anambra Central and the reason politicians from the zone did not seek the highest political office in the state this time around is because by the time Governor Peter Obi completes his tenure next year, Anambra Central would have occupied the seat for 11 years (eight years by Obi and three years by Ngige). So, it is equity consideration on their part, one may say. For the South senatorial zone, the four governors they had produced namely, Dr. Chukwuemeka Ezeife, Dr. Chinwoke Mbadinuju, Dr. Andy Uba and Mrs. Virgy Etiaba, have jointly occupied the Government House for about six years. Therefore, for Saturday’s election, issues that will be on the front burner include the zone of the candidates, the political godfathers behind them, their closeness with the churches, programmes in their manifestoes and their antecedents, among other considerations. Anambra North (Obiano and Nwoye) The emergence of the two candidates from a zone noted for delivering bloc votes during elections is a source of concern to stakeholders from the area. When Nwoye and Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu from Anambra South were engaged in a legal battle for the ticket of the PDP, many people from Anambra North somehow prayed that the area should not be made to face the problem of splitting their votes between him (Nwoye) and Obiano. So, when Nwoye eventually won at the Supreme Court, the reality starred them in the face. Tomorrow, the two, who are in fact from the same local government (Anambra East, may have to decide whether to go for one person or vote according to their political leanings in which case there will be the inevitable splitting of votes in the area. It was gathered as of press time that prominent people from the area are still putting heads together to resolve the issue before the election. But if the two candidates split the votes in the four local government areas of Anambra East, Anambra West, Ayamelum and Oyi which is the area popularly known as Omambala, whoever gets the upper hand in the other three local government areas that complete the zone namely, Onitsha North, Onitsha South and Ogbaru, will carry the day in the zone. For the two candidates, their performance in Anambra Central will be determined by the personality of Governor Peter Obi, who is totally in charge of Anaocha and Njikoka, two local governments that can be described as no go areas for other politicians, in which case, they have become Obiano territory. In Dunukofia, where Prince Arthur Eze, the billionaire sponsor of Nwoye comes from, other parties may try, but it is PDP that will likely carry the day. Awka North and Awka South will likely be shared among Obiano, Ngige, Nwoye and Ubah in that order. In Idemili North and Idemili South, Ngige will get the majority any day, although the influence of Senator Annie Okonkwo, who abandoned Ngige after he was initially named his campaign director general, should not be underrated. Okonkwo has already pitched tent with Nwoye and another advantage Nwoye has is the massive support from the youths, who have already stormed Anambra State ahead of the election. In the South senatorial zone, with the position of the Uba family still unclear and with the loss of the PDP ticket by Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu, the area will be for grabs for the candidates, although Nnewi North and Ekwusigo are very likely to go to Ifeanyi Ubah, Also, Obiano, Ubah and Nwoye are also going to make impact in Ihiala local government. Ihiala, it should be recalled, used to be the traditional PDP area, but it changed during the second tenure election of Governor Obi in 2010, when the people decided to vote for APGA because of what the governor did in the area. This time, many prominent people in the area are said to be supporting Obiano. For Orumba North and Orumba South, what will determine the candidates’ performance is their effort to sell their programmes. Ezeemo is from Aguata local government, but whether he would be able to stamp his authority there and in other local government areas in the zone will be seen on Election Day. The Running Mates Another factor that will also influence the election will be the running mates and their ability to pull out the votes from their areas. For instance, Obiano’s running mate is from Enugwu Ukwu, a densely populated area of Njikoka local government in Anambra Central, while his wife is from Ogbunike in Oyi local government. Ngige’s deputy is from Anambra West local government area in Anambra North and he is a known grass root politician. Also, Nwoye’s deputy is from Orumba and he too is a known politician in the state and particularly Nnewi, where he is practices medicine. Ubah’s deputy is a Prince from Ukpo in Dunukofia, although his uncle, Prince Arthur Eze is the person funding PDP in the election Powers behind the candidates APGA – Unarguably, Governor Obi is the power behind the candidate of APGA. His performance in the state in the past seven and half years in all parts of the state is the selling point for the APGA campaign. Obi has mixed the campaigns with the commissioning of projects and the flagging off of new ones, including the equipment of educational and health institutions. With the statement by Obiano that he will continue with the projects started by Obi, there is no doubt in anybody’s mind that it is the same government and if Obiano can govern the way Obi is doing if he wins, then the state is on the part of rapid development because Obi has laid a solid foundation for taking the state to the next level. With government machinery at his disposal, Obiano is having an easy campaign and with his academic excellence which has been sold to the electorate, he is the candidate to beat. APC – Senator Ngige, on his own, is popular among Anambra people, having been in government at a time the state was in dire need for good leadership. For this election, his backers are the governors of the APC states who want to use the Anambra election prove that the party is prepared to take over the country after the 2015 election. PDP- Comrade Nwoye’s campaign is being backed by the oil magnet, Prince Arthur Eze. Eze has said that it is his desire to ensure that Nwoye becomes the next governor of Anambra State. The prince has consistently said that his interest is not what he would benefit from government because God has already blessed him, adding that his main concern is to ensure that a humble person like Nwoye is in charge of Anambra State. LP- Ifeanyi Ubah is a very wealth person who said he does not need to enrich himself any longer through public office. His reason for seeking to govern the state, he said, is to help the less privileged persons and thousands of youths roaming the streets in search of jobs. PPA- Ezeemo too has not godfather and he is enjoying the wealth he acquired abroad. He was even said to be the person funding the APC before he fell apart with the leaders of the party over the ticket of the party for the governorship election in Anambra State. Role of church The church is playing a major role in this election. Remarkably, the four most popular candidates, Nwoye, Obiano, Ngige and Ubah belong to the Catholic Church and they have been wooing the church for support. The clergy also appear to be divided over who to support, but there are indications that the bishops may direct the priests on who to support among the four persons vying for the exalted office. As expected, the candidates have been making mouth watering donations to the various churches to solicit their support. Credit: Vanguardngr

Do you know that upcoming actors in Nigeria now pay to feature in movies?

I know it sounds unbelievable, but it's fact! A-list Nollywood actors & actresses get paid for featuring in movies, but if you're an unknown actor struggling to get into the movie industry, some movie producers make you pay to feature in their movies. That's the new trend now. I'm sure some Nollywood practitioners will come here to deny this but y'all know it's true. And if you don't know this already, you guys need to start investigating this.

If you're looking to feature in a movie, all you need to do is pay a fee, no audition is required. For minor roles, these producers demand anything from N50k to N100k...it all depends on the role they are giving you. If you want to play a lead role it's between N500k to N1million. Waka pass people are even made to pay.

The trick some of these producers use is this; they say they are not making money from these movies because people aren't buying them so can't invest all their money in it. They also say finding financiers to pay for the production of a movie is hard, so for these movies to see the light of day, every cast member has to contribute. Thing is, many are eager to pay. Several people told me that it's the girls they refer to as 'runz girls' looking for popularity that started this trend. They would offer movie producers money to feature in their movie so they can refer to themselves as actresses and now it's become a part of Nollywood.

But let me state here that there are some movie producers who don't do this...not all of them demand for money. But a lot of them do. Is that OK? What's your thought on this new trend?

Producer Shizzi: Wande Coal’s ‘Go Low’ Was Stolen From Me

Producer Shizzi: Wande Coal’s ‘Go Low’ Was Stolen From Me
Producer Shizzi has been caught up in the intellectual theft brouhaha between Don Jazzy and former Mavin label mate Wande Coal, and has released his official statement.
Shizzi, who produced Davido’s Skelewu, said,
I have heard and seen some folks rants about me stealing production credit for Wande Coal’s new single Baby Face and I would like to clarify this issue. I was only doing my job by making the beat for Wande and that’s what I did. I don’t see any reason why people should jump into quick conclusions without taking their time to really dig into the matter for facts.
Two years back, I remember I created a demo for Wande Coal’s Shawty Go Low and someone else took the credits. I was in shock because I had plans to finish the song with Wande and was hoping it would be released as a single which I produced.
Don Jazzy had posted on Twitter last night that Baby Face, Wande Coal’s latest single belonged to him and wanted credits.

Mavin Records Deactivates With Press Release

Mavin Records Deactivates With Press Release
Mavin Records just released an official statement stating Wande Coal’s exit from the label. It seems the release of ‘Babyface’ by Wande Coal was the final straw as stated in the official press release. Check out the press release below:
It is with deep regret that we officially announce the departure of recording artist Wande Ojosipe, popularly known as Wande Coal, from Mavin Records due to irreconcilable differences.
Over the past few months, Mavin Records has made a concerted move to consolidate its position in the Nigerian music industry. Mavin has pursued a renewed ethos to raise its standards of quality and professionalism to a world-class level. Wande’s vision has not aligned with ours and a few months ago all parties mutually agreed that a separation would be the best course of action.
Legal parties on both sides have spent the past six months trying to reach an amicable solution in terms of musical property rights. However the decision by Wande Coal to release ‘Baby Face’ purportedly as his own material is a direct breach of intellectual property law and compelled an immediate clarification on our part.
Both Mavin Records and Wande Coal have enjoyed a remarkable run in the course of their working relationship. It is unfortunate that conflicting priorities contributed to the premature curtailment of a hitherto fruitful accord.
Mavin Records reaffirms its goal to constantly provide high quality music to our fans and introduce new and exciting talent into the industry.
We wish Wande Coal the best of luck in all his future endeavours.

Nigerian Universities Must Reopen This Week, With Or Without ASUU - FG

According to Scan-News, in a last ditch effort to resolve the ASUU strike, President Goodluck Jonathan will on Monday, November 4, meet with the leadership of ASUU at the Presidential Villa.

An official of the Vice President’s office who pleaded anonymity told Scan News that the President will today present to the ASUU leadership the administration’s last concession for them to call off the prolonged strike.

But if ASUU fails to call off, the Federal Government will then resort to plan B, which will be to compulsorily open the universities, using the instrumentality of the governing councils and the school managements.

Already, most of the governing councils of the universities have started meeting to work out modalities for the compulsory re-opening of the universities should ASUU fail to honour the personal request of President Jonathan.

Scan News gathered that the Supervising Minister of Education, Barr.
Nyesom Wike and the Vice Chancellors of Public Universities also discussed the re-opening of the schools last Monday. Most of the Vice Chancellors suggested the compulsory re-opening of the schools, should the last ditch efforts fail.

It was gathered that security report available to the Presidency may have necessitated this line of action to salvage the universities system from the direction it is facing at present.

Catholic Church Issues Statement About The Anambra Adoration Ground Stampede That Killed Over 30

In the early hours of Saturday, November 02, 2013, there was a stampede moments after prayers at the Holy Ghost Adoration Centre, Uke, in Idemili South LGA of Anambra State.
The stampede, which occurred while people were going home, resulted in the loss of some lives.
Some are still injured and receiving treatments in some hospitals.
Vigil was usually held at the centre on every first Friday of the month. The crowd at the centre was unprecedented on this first Friday of November 2013 probably because it was the Solemnity of All Saints and a holy day of obligation for Catholic faithful.

Save for the unprecedented crowd, the vigil started and ended normally.
The stampede was reportedly caused by a false alarm raised by somebody in the crowd along one of the narrow roads out of the town. The crowd was so much that people wanting to leave all at the same time made it very difficult for people to find enough space to move.
This happened in just one of the roads out of the town.

The outpouring of concerns and supports with regard to the incident has been tremendous. The Archbishop of Onitsha, Most Rev. valerian Okeke, is still deeply saddened by this ugly incident.
He has visited the dead in the morgue and the injured in the hospitals. His heart goes out to the families and friends of those who lost their lives in the incident.
He promises his closeness to them and all the faithful of the Holy Ghost Adoration Centre, Uke, and especially the Spiritual Director of the Centre, Rev. Fr. Emmanuel Obimma, who is hard hit by the ugly incident.

Full investigations have been launched into the matter and more efforts are being made to protect the lives of all worshippers at the centre.
The Archdiocese of Onitsha remains very grateful to the many volunteers who swung into action immediately saving as many lives as possible. We also thank the management and staff of the various hospitals where the injured were sent immediately for treatment. They have been wonderful.
We remain grateful to you all for your closeness and sympathies at this difficult moment. May the dead through the mercy of God rest in peace, Amen.

Gov. Peter Obi Accuses Ngige’s Supporters For The Anambra Stampede

Governor Peter Obi has denied claims that he was responsible for the Adoration ground stampede that left about 25 people dead early morning Saturday. Rather he's blaming the supporters of the All Progressives Alliance Governorship Candidate in the forthcoming Anambra State Governorship elections for the unfortunate incident.
According to the Governor in a state broadcast, his visit to the Holy Ghost Adoration Ministry crusade on Friday was on the invitation of the serving priest of the ministry, Reverend-Father Obimma.
And he left the crusade ground at 3:00am Saturday morning, whereas the incident took place at 5:00am.
He said:
“When I was called upon by the presiding priest after the Holy Mass to speak at about 12.15am, a group of people located in 3 different spots started shouting the name of a gubernatorial candidate, Dr Chris Ngige and waving the brooms of All Progressives Congress and pictures of the same candidate in the November 16 election.
It took up to 20 minutes for the presiding priest to calm them down. I was surprised that some people would turn a prayer ground into a campaign venue.'
Gov Peter Obi has visited the injured who had been taken to hospital, and while sympathising with the victims’ families, he said investigation into the incident had commenced.

Davido Speaks On How He Plans To Quit Music At 30 + How His Billionaire Dad Still Scolds Him

He granted an interview with punch where he said this and more. Wizkid is not a threat to him, Skelewu is already big and some people are just starting out at 30 but he is already a success and threat at 20.

“Wizkid is not a rival. I see nobody as competition or threat. God is behind me, so I just go into the studio, do my music and everything is fine. I develop and write most of my songs in the studio. I’m not afraid of competition or the fact that some person will just appear on the scene and take the shine. After all, I did it to some people, so I expect that it is something that must happen to everyone because you can’t be shining forever. But once you are good to others, make good music, have loyal fans, that’s all that matters. Continue below.

I have plans to go into oil and gas business with my elder brother next year. I want to do music for 10 years. By that time, I will be 30, and free to rest. Some people are just starting out at 30 but I am already a success and threat at 20. Fame at a young age is a plus because I still have like 10 years to ball while some people are just starting at 27 and 30.”

On Skelewu

“The song is big already; so whatever we do people are still going to talk anyway. I shot the video like a movie and there are three videos, so people can watch whichever one they want.If you don’t like the instructional video, you can watch Sesan’s, if you don’t like that one; you can watch Moe Musa’s. If people want, I will shoot one more video, it’s not easy.”

On his dad

"Yes my father is rich, but the truth is some people only knew who he was after I released my song, ‘Omo Baba Olowo’. I want people to know that the song was not a hit because of my father but because it was dope. I didn’t sing ‘OBO’ because of my father’s wealth – contrary to what people think. My father and family always keep me grounded. They call me from time to time to ask about my welfare. My father actually visits all these blogs to read and see all my nonsense. Just like the typical Yoruba father, he scolds me and whenever he does that, I will say, ‘Daddy cool down, what’s going on, relax.’ Although he is also very proud of me, he is scared and happy for me at the same time.”

MI opensup on 'dissing' Olamide, & why DaGrin is irreplacable

MI responded to a question by fellow Rapper Phenom in the "Rap Battle " segment of RELOADED Magazine's Nov issue
"Look at my history, I have beef with someone, I mention their names. 'Akpata' wasn't targeted at anyone. A few people went to town saying it was targeted at Olamide but it wasn't. I'm saying that because a lot of people have implied that because I said a line about DaGrin, I was dissing OlamideIf anyone got the wrong idea, I apologize. The line about DaGrin was more about DaGrin than it was about anyoneelse.DaGrin was a hero.He was a real success story for the streets. He was special, he had an energy that was like nothingelse. When he died, nothingelse mattered to entertainers ;he was that special. I think Olamide is super creative and so is Reminisce and i think to far they have done great with indigenous ‎rap but DaGrin will stay in a special place"
 The controversial lyrics read
"Omo I miss dagrin the streets they miss him too
Cause ever since he left we got nothing to listen to
These rappers missed his shoe
Nobody speaking truth"
