The
30-year-old vigilante officer was said to have committed the crime on
Monday night at Alewenu village, adjacent the Traffic Compliance and
Enforcement Agency (TRACE) headquarters.
It was gathered that the victim (name withheld), an ND1 Banking and Finance student, was returning from a group reading ahead of their second semester examination at about 10p.m. when she was accosted by the suspect, who instilled fear into her to give her a punishment for walking at night, but ended up forcing her to a hideout and raping her.
However, the suspect was nabbed by passers-by who took him to the Ibara divisional police station, Abeokuta.
The victim was said to have been taken to an undisclosed hospital for medical attention.
Meanwhile, the incident resulted in a protest staged by students of the polytechnic to the office of the state Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development at Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.
The aggrieved students described the alleged rape as “barbaric” and called on the state government to urgently bring the suspected vigilance officer to justice.
In reaction to the incident, the coordinator of Child Protection Network, CPN, Mrs Peju Osoba, who addressed the protesting students, appealed to them to remain calm, saying, “It is a crime against the state and the Child Protection Network will ensure that justice is achieved."
The acting police public relations officer in the state, Mr Abimbola Oyeyemi, confirmed the arrest of the vigilante officer and said he would be transferred to the state police command headquarters, Eleweran, Abeokuta for further investigation.
